Microcurrent Therapy

What is Microcurrent and how it can help with your skin care concerns.

As a master aesthetician of 31 years, I have been using microcurrent for about 25 not only on myself but also in my skin care practice. It is an alternating low level electric therapy. We are electric beings with water making up over 60% of our body weight. Science 101 teaches us that water is a great conductor of electricity. The human body has its own electric or “microcurrent” frequency that utilizes the same range of electric frequencies that our human bodies already utilize daily to function.

Microcurrent used in skin care practice is just slightly higher than our bodies own frequency rhythm, triggering responsive and long-lasting results. It is also FDA cleared. Microcurrent promotes healing on a cellular level. Stimulating the skin, aiding in cell-turnover, it tones/tightens the skin, reduces the appearance of pores, lifts by targeting the muscles of the face. Microcurrent is known as a non-surgical facelift. It re-educates the muscles of the face. Muscle has amazing memory so even if you start with microcurrent doing it consistently as recommended for 60 days straight and forget a week on vacation, the minute you use your microcurrent device you will see your skin bounce right back! Think of daily microcurrent as a personal trainer and work out for your skin.

I often treat just ½ of my clients face to show them the difference and it truly is like night and day. A trick to really show off these results is in clients who typically wear eyeglasses. When you treat ½ of the face they can really see the difference in the lift and toned skin with where their eyebrows normally would rest on their eyeglass frames. When half the face is treated the same clients could visibly see how much higher and lifted the treated brow was sitting above the frame. Just fun proof it is doing its job! So, for fellow aestheticians out there who have skeptical clients show them this way by initially treating only one half of the face. Have them sit up as we all look younger laying down, and have them put their glasses back on. It is incredible and works every time!

The wonderful thing about microcurrent is that it is a progressive treatment and natural way to correct many skin care and aging concerns but without undergoing surgery often associated with pain and downtime not to mention the expense. Microcurrent is a painless and very affordable treatment and often a relaxing one as it has been proven to help with mood disorders. It is very uplifting physically and mentally!

When paired with good skin care that is your skin nutrition and microcurrent is your skin’s exercise. Mimicking your body’s own natural current it deeply tones, and contours the face. Also reducing fine lines and wrinkles over time. At around the 8-week mark is when you will begin to see wrinkle reduction. Some individuals depending on age and skin are quite responsive and will see immediate skin improvement while some may need to go beyond the 8-week mark to see improvements. We all need to have realistic expectations given several factors including not just age but the amount of skin damage.

Anytime we aid in cellular turn-over we are helping our bodies to create and produce new collagen, the main structural protein found in our skin that essentially holds it together. By the age of 25 our bodies collagen production is greatly reduced therefore it is required to stimulate new collagen growth. This is why after 25 we begin to see early signs of aging in our skin. Fine lines to the forehead, perhaps some fine lines around the eye area and nasalabial folds with facial movement and expression but less lines at rest. Prevention and consistency is the key. Using quality skin loving ingredients is also essential as we age. Vitamin C is the number one vitamin that helps aid in collagen production. So, utilize quality vitamin C in your skin care products. Not all vitamin C is created equal so be sure that the form you are getting in your skin care is listed as L-ascorbic acid, the purest form. Vitamin C also fights free radical damage that causes oxidative stress and aging.

How to use your Microcurrent device for the best results:

Microcurrent is to be used with any water-soluble product to conduct. It is NOT recommended to use with any oil products as oil is not a conductor for electricity. I recommend and personally use myself either a vitamin C in powder form with added water or a conductor gel. Gold is a wonderful conductor and you can find Ultrasonic gels with added gold. You may also feel free to use ultrasound gel (that they use during pregnancy on your belly) and it can be found on Amazon. Do not attempt to use microcurrent on bare skin as it must have something to conduct the electricity to work. Water alone can be used or Hyaluronic acid is also a great water-soluble conductor and plumps the skin filling in fine lines plus aiding in moisture loss. Dry skin always looks older. Keep well hydrated as part of your daily beauty regimen. Start your day first thing without coffee or O.J. with a large glass of water. This aids significantly with maintaining hydration levels throughout the day plus helps aid in heavy metal toxin removal. Microcurrent is also amazing for acne by increasing the cellular turnover by sloughing off dead skin cells and increasing oxygen. Acne can not live in the presence of oxygen. Microcurrent is simple and only takes about 5 minutes every day.

Contraindications & Precautions: There are certain medical conditions that are considered not safe to be exposed to this type of electrical therapy. If you have an electrical implant device such as a pacemaker the current may interfere with the electric device in the pacemaker. Epilepsy or history of seizures as microcurrent can set off the balance of your brains own electrical currents triggering a seizure. Cancer patients active and up to five years post treatments should avoid any microcurrent as it does excite cells and if you are pregnant as there is just not enough research. Any heart conditions as it can cause heart palpitations. Diabetes patients like pregnant woman we just don't have a lot of research on, though many doctors consider this low level current safe. Open sores would be another contraindication along with metal implants as it heats the tissue surrounding the implant by warming up the skin thus could cause tissue damage to the surrounding skin. Amalgam fillings aka silver fillings and crowns are safe but you may experience a little more activity in those regions. As with any procedure you are not sure of, always consult with your doctor if you have any concerns.

Happy lifting!

I will be going over light therapy benefits when paired with Microcurrent in my next blog. Or will add to this blog. 😊
